Determination of the Iron-binding Capacity of Blood Serum

Guy Nadeau 1 and Benoit Fortin 1

1 Laboratoire de Biochimie, Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement, Québec, Canada.

A simple experiment was performed to ascertain whether procedures for estimating the iron-binding capacity (IBC) of blood serum are quantitative. This was accomplished by adding beta-globulin (obtained by fractionation of human plasma) to various serum specimens. The beta-globulin solutions were first assayed for their IBC. Their addition to serum in these recovery experiments provided data for evaluation of methodology.
