Gasliquid chromatographic methods are described for measuring phenylalanine metabolites in urine and serum. These were studied in controls and in various types of hyperphenylalaninemics. The plasma phenyllactic acid concentration increased as the serum phenylalanine concentration increased. The 24-h urinary excretion of both phenylalanine and phenyllactic acid depends upon their respective concentrations in serum.
