Estimation of Cholesterol in Small Quantities of Cerebrospinal Fluid

M. F. Sheff 1, M. Denise Gretz 1, and J. B. McMarlin 1

1 Department of Neurology, Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia 7, Pa.

A method is described for the estimation of cholesterol in spinal fluid using the Tschugaeff reaction to produce a pink color proportional to the cholesterol concentration. The reproducibility and accuracy of the method are of a satisfactory order. The authors feel that, providing elementary safety precautions are observed, the method is suitable for the rapid routine estimation of cholesterol in small samples of spinal fluid.
