Fred S. Apple and Alan H.B. Wu

In the Heart Health editorial "Myocardial Infarction Redefined: Role of Cardiac Troponin Testing" by F. Apple and A.H.B. Wu (Clin Chem 2001;47:377–9), the following addendum was inadvertently omitted at printing.

Addendum: At a recent (January 26–27, 2001) "Acute MI Guidelines Conference" sponsored by the Duke Clinical Research Institute, a group of international cardiologists, including many of those involved in crafting the newly proposed ESC/ACC guidelines, convened to reemphasize the need to move forward with the recommendations of the new consensus document (3). New and recently published data were presented to the FDA and both the in vitro diagnostic and pharmaceutical industries to explore ways to (a) integrate cardiac troponin testing into acute coronary syndrome clinical trials, and (b) push for the FDA and the in vitro diagnostics industry to improve and more thoroughly document the low end precision of all cardiac troponin assays presently in the marketplace and those being assessed for 510K approval. The conference members left with a clear understanding of the problems and were supportive of the goals presented. This meeting no doubt will be followed by increased interaction between all agencies (including a major role for AACC) to move these efforts forward.
